Shibuya Ward, Tokyo
Neighborhood Profile
Shibuya is located in the southwest of the Tokyo 23 wards, but it is in the eastern part of Tokyo prefecture and in the center
of the Tokyo Special Wards. In the center of Shibuya-ku, there is Meiji shrine and Yoyogi park, which are surrounded by a lot
of green space and if put together with Shinjuku Gyoen, would make one fifth of all the green space in Shibuya-ku.
 Meijio Shrine
It used to be a rather commercial district, but in the 1950's, a lot of high-rise buildings were built, and it has become one
of the biggest office districts in Tokyo.
After the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, infrastructure was developed and the view of Shibuya has been completely changed. In 1965,
the Shibuya Regional Office and Public Hall were completed, and the welfare office was transferred due to the amendment of the local law.
In April 1975, when the local law was amended, the mayor election was replaced after 24 years. In the meantime, office works of
public health care, and such, were transferred from the Tokyo Metropolitan government.
The population in Shibuya-ku has been declining due to development; on the other hand, commercial and office districts have increased,
and transportation also extended to the outskirts of Shibuya-ku for commuters.
Around Shibuya station and the Harajuku area, many Western-style buildings, boutique, and department stores decided this is the
place to be. Tons of people gather in this area, but especially it is popular with young people who can be seen hanging around
every day. Also, these days, people over 30 can find interesting places for day and night life.
